The Mills of God
THE MILLS OF GOD The Psalmist wrote repeatedly of the problem of the wicked prospering, at
times while the righteous suffered, but he always notes before closing, that in
the end destruction awaits the wicked. The Bible always warns us to guard against being overwrought because of
evil-doers. I confess that when someone in the news rises to great popularity
although his morals are in the gutter, that it bothers me. "What is wrong with
everybody?" I am apt to cry out. "Can't they see the barnyard underneath that
thin film of snow?" When we hold steady with patience a while, we see the ones whom the world
idolizes soon come to some crisis, their immoralities are brought to light and
their destruction falls upon them. The sex idols of the movie going world soon
are awash in a deluge of first, heartbreaks, tears, divorce and hatreds and
then shooting, overdose of drugs or suicide, overdose of sleeping pills. Babe Ruth said, "One day a hero, the next day a bum." Usually the mills of God don't finish their grinding in one day, however,
but they do grind on until all can see that in spite of some years of
idolatrous popularity, in the end came their death and destruction. When Joseph P. Kennedy was pouring some millions of his ill gotten liquor
wealth into making his son, Jack, president, my father looked up from his Bible
and said, "The Word says that Cursed is he that putteth the bottle to his
brother's lips. God's Word never fails. Those millions are under a curse.
The whole liquor industry is under a curse. The higher that man and his son
rise in success and popularity, the greater will be the tragedy of them and the
family." I was impressed, but later on in the election was disappointed to see Jack
win, without much doubt, bought by the liquor millions, the Las Vegas mob, and
the big city political crooked machines, like Daly's Chicago. Now it is well known and documented that the new president, arranged to
have a steady line of chorus girls and movie actresses into the White House for
sex, while arranging just as faithfully to attend mass. The evil liberal
press, or course, kept all of this quiet, reserving their efforts to
investigate politicians they did not like, those not so liberal. But inevitably the destined doom begins to catch up. The moral debts fall
due, and the prophetic word fulfilled. One after another tragic end awaits
idolized ones so proud in all their immoralities. A biographer of Joseph P Kennedy says he broke out of the Irish Boston
ghetto by sheer force and audacity, trampling is his climb not only the customs
of Boston society, but also the morality and standards of their Puritan
forebears. His rise was meteoric for a time, but in the end society, destiny
and the old moral standards broke him and his family. Old Joe, long before
Jack, was also accustomed to take chorus girls and movie starlets into his
office, closing the door with a leering smirk while business associated cooled
their heels in the outer office. He too, was just a faithful in seeing his
children attended masses, maintained his friendship with the Cardinal,
arranging a private audience with the Pope, and receiving medals and honors
from his Church. GRIND SLOWLY? BUT SLOWLY AND THEY GRIND EXCEEDINGLY FINE. The little Austrian paper-hanger was thought to be a Chaplinesque and comic
figure for a time, but proved to have that same charismatic quality which
produces a spectacular popularity. His architect found he could design a
setting too grandiose for the little Fuhrer with the little mustache but big
ego. When his armies had overrun several countries with spectacular ease he
bragged they were founding a Reich that would last a thousand years. It lasted
little more than a thousand days then fell with a destruction that left the
nation in rubble, millions dead and other millions barely alive, enduring every
kind of suffering. Many people, these days, though not political leaders, are building the
house of their lives on the sands of easy morals, quick money and worldly self
indulgent pleasure. The Bible warns that for such a building, the waves rose,
the storms blew, and great was the destruction thereof. What is the Rock we should build on? It is not popularity, nor philosophy,
science or wealth, much less on the permissive morality of popular religions:
the only firm Rock is Christ Jesus. Billy Graham shows in his recent best selling book on the Four Horsemen of
the Apocalypse, that one of the destroying forces was false religion. This
includes many religions or denominations all over the world. Each religion has
its theology, its raison dètre, its arguments showing its superiority, but if
it does not produce holiness among its followers, it is a false religion used
by Satan to sweep its devotees into sin and destruction. Philosophically and
abstractly no religion urges its followers to sin. But if its net result keeps
them from the only salvation that keeps and saves from sin, then that final end
is the same, death and hell, which follow after the Four Horsemen. Political leaders or idols of the movies, generally the higher the rise,
the greater the fall. In reading of Babylon, Ninevah and Tyre and warnings so oft repeated in the
Old Testament prophets, we must keep in mind the main significance is statement
of principle that any nation risen to great fame and power and prosperity is
bound to soon have an ignominious end. This has happened steadily throughout
history. In the last two world wars most of the countries of Europe have had
their turn. The Super-powers that remain are as surely in line as God is on
His throne. Never has any nation been more pleasure and sex mad. The
handwriting is already on the wall. The angel is holding the winds of
destruction a little longer because the believers are making effort, using
every moment, and dedicating their every resource toward preaching the Gospel
of the Lord. Christian friends, testify to everyone at every step, "Turn ye, turn ye.
Why will ye die? Come to the fount of the Lord while there is yet time. Come
out of her, come out off Babylon, My people, do not be partakers of her sins
and destruction." The Lord is coming soon. Maranatha. Yea, come Lord Jesus. |
